With more companies and brands shifting toward online sales, Horizon Hobby has announced a surprising change for their ECX brand. From now on, if you want to pick up the latest radio-controlled vehicle from ECX, you’ll need to head to your local hobby shop.
While I am primarily an online shopper, I do enjoy visiting my local hobby shops, both to see models up-close and to chat with the folks behind the counter. This move is a bit of a stunner, but I believe I understand the reasoning behind it. By moving this budget-friendly brand offline, Horizon Hobby is making an effort to drive traffic to the local shops that have been a staple in the hobby for years.
Not only do you get to see these vehicles up-close, you also have an opportunity to speak with folks who are knowlegeable about the R/C models and accessories which they sell. I’m not sure how this will turn out in the end, but I hope the change in direction pays off for everyone who’s involved.
