Tim Smith is putting MaxAmps to the time-test with his trail truck

By: Tim Gluth

What started out as an idea floated by Tim Smith on a recent RC Newb Podcast episode has quickly escalated into a real thing. On Saturday, March 15, 2014, Tim is going to see how much juice he can wring out of a MaxAmps 8000 mah 2-cell battery pack. I'm interested in seeing how this turns out for a variety of reasons.

As it was revealed (also on the latest podcast episode), I don't run LiPo batteries in my R/C vehicles. It's not that I haven't wanted to. I just...haven't. As many folks have told me, I'm missing out. If Tim is able to get what he's expecting to get for run time (8 hours) then I'll be lining up a few packs for my own purchase. Getting the most run-time out of a battery is a great challenge, and the more run-time you have, the more fun you can experience with your vehicle.

Tale of the tape:

  • Attempting to run 8 hours (or more) of hard trail driving using a standard SCX10 trail truck (13.5 brushless motor) on a MaxAmps 8000 mah 2 cell pack
  • This will be a NO touch run with no stops or breaks
  • If the truck fails we end the challenge and try again another day

Best of luck to Tim and MaxAmps during this challenge. For those looking to check on his progress, you can follow along at the Tim Smith Racing Facebook page.

UPDATE:

After a day on the trail, Tim and his team were able to get 8 hours and 5 minutes out of the MaxAmps 8000 mah 2-cell battery.  That's a number that I'm still wrapping my head around.  Congratulations to all involved!  It looks like I'll need to pick up a few LiPo packs for my own use.
